BUDDHA PLAY GROUND
PHOTO EXHIBITION OF ELIA STARIS
McLeod Ganj, the mountain part of north India's city Dharamsala, has become world wide famous for being the epicentre of the Tibetan exile community and government and home of the Dalai Lama. In the spring of 2008, a Tibetan, wishing to offer to his fellow country people a taste of the Olympic games and also to bring international focus on the Tibetan issue, a few months before the Olympics in Bejing start, organises games wich he calls Tibetan Olympics.
Having traveled in McLeod in the '90s and proving right the traveller's saying that "if you visit McLeod once, you definitely would want to came again", i find this opportunity a good one to travel again to this part of the Himalayas. For a week i am photographing the games and after they finish, charmed by the gentleness and the meditative peace of the people, i decide to stay in the town for the rest two weeks wich i have before my returning home, instead of wandering to other places wich was my idea in the beginning,
The photographs that i present here (in Ikaria due to the small room i exhibit only a part of the work) are the juice of my experience in this special place in wich Tibet meets the west, a traditional and closed society meets the modern world. The strict spiritual tradition of Tibet not only doesn't oppose the technological and cultural opening of India but it also creates a new spirituality, grounded with the everyday life. Ofcourse, this doesn't happen without problems or side effects but it is a dynamic process. The title of the exhibition, Buddha Play Ground, tries to express this merging of meditation with playfulness, the inward orientation with the outward expression and with the being part of the ever changing world that we live in. It is the portrait of a world-person that can find the deep contact with his being without having to leave behind the crowded streets of the market.
The photographic work for the Tibetan Olympics wasn't approved for publishing by the big "independent" magazines of Greece, apparently for political reasons. The travel part of my work was published in "Geotropio" magazine of one of the biggest Greek newspapers "Eleutherotypia" in July of 2009. The photographs presented here are from both works.

ΕΚΘΕΣΗ ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΗΛΙΑ ΣΤΑΡΗ
Το McLeod Ganj, προάστιο της πόλης Dharamsala της βόρειας Ινδίας, έχει γίνει διεθνώς γνωστό καθώς είναι το κέντρο της Θιβετάνικης εξόριστης κοινότητας και η κατοικία του Δαλά'ι' Λάμα. Την άνοιξη του 2008, ένας Θιβετάνος, θέλωντας να δώσει στους εξόριστους συμπατριώτες του μία γεύση από την αθλητική γιορτή των Ολυμπιακών του Πεκίνου, οργάνωσε αγώνες που τους ονόμασε Θιβετάνικους Ολυμπιακούς. Ο Ηλίας Στάρης έχοντας πρωτοεπισκεπτεί το μέρος την δεκαετία του '90, ακολουθώντας την ταξιδιωτική παροιμία, που λέει πως "αν βρέθηκες εκεί μία φορά, σίγουρα θα θελήσεις να ξαναπάς", βρήκε μια καλή ευκαιρία να ταξιδέψει πάλι σε αυτή την γωνιά των Ιμαλα'ί'ων. Για μία εβδομάδα φωτογράφιζε τους αγώνες και όταν αυτή τελείωσαν, γοητευμένος από την ευγένια και την γαλήνη των ανθρώπων αποφάσισε να μείνει και τις υπόλοιπες δύο εβδομάδες που διέθετε, στην περιοχή, αντί να περιηγηθεί στα βουνά όπως ήταν η αρχική του ιδέα.
Η φωτογραφική εργασία που παρουσιάζει εδώ είναι το απόσταγμα της εμπειρίας του από αυτό το ιδιαίτερο μέρος στο οποίο το Θιβέτ συναντάει την δύση. Η αυστηρή πνευματική παράδοση του Θιβέτ όχι απλώς δεν βρίσκεται αντίθετη με το τεχνολογικό και πολιτιστικό άνοιγμα της Ινδίας αλλά δημιουργεί μία νέα πνευματικότητα, γειωμένη με την καθημερινότητα. Ο τίτλος της έκθεσης Buddha Play Ground, προσπαθεί να εκφράσει αυτό το πάντρεμα του διαλογισμού με το παιχνίδι, της ενδοσκόπησης και εσωστρέφειας με την εξωστρέφεια και το να είναι κανείς κομμάτι αυτού του διαρκώς μεταβαλόμενου μελισιού στο οποίο ζούμε. Είναι το πορτραίτο ενός ανθρώπου που μπορεί να βρει την επαφή με τον εαυτό του χωρίς να χρειαστεί να εγκαταλείψει τους πολύβοους δρόμους του κόσμου.
Για την ιστορία, να αναφέρω πως η εργασία με τους Θιβετάνικους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες, απορίφθηκε από όλα τα μεγάλα και ανεξάρτητα έντυπα της χώρας μας, προφανώς για πολιτικούς λόγους. Το ταξιδιωτικό κομμάτι της εργασίας δημοσιευθηκε στο Γεωτρόπιο της Ελευθεροτυπίας, τευχος 483, 18 Ιουλίου 2009.
