25 May 2008, Tibetan Olympics Gran Finale, Track and Field Games

The last day of the Tibetan Olympics was hosting the more spectacular and breathtaking games, the running, jumping, javelin. The place was crowded with people and press. For the children of TCV, it was probably the first time in their lives, that they experience as spectators a big athletic event. Some of them took part in it, dressed in their traditional cloth, playing the music anthem and parading the flag of Tibet. After this opening, came the Olymbic flame and the presentation of the athletes. The "Westerners" had also the pleasure to meet the TCV, as they normally wouldn't have a lot of opportunities to come to this place. For some of them, like a friend from Switzerland, it was the chance to meet in person with the child that they had financially adopted back from their "Safe European Home". The games and the atmosphere was wonderful. At some point the press people were asked to form teams in order to run a "press  relay race". I have no good photographs of it to show but i have the experience. My team proved to be the slowest, I had the last run in my team and eventhough i run fast, when i finished noone else was running. But that was nothing because everyone of us was applaused as winners. The track events were 100 metres dash, 400 metres dash, 100 metres hurdles and the field events, High jump, Long jump and Javelin. The final winners, for women, were Tsering Lhamo 1st, Dhartso Kyi 2cond, and Dolkar Tso 3rd and for men, Dorji Tsering 1st, Dawa Dalpa 2ond and Tenzin Choephel 3rd.During those days i was amased bu the ethos of all the athletes. When a week after i met the first winner for men, Dorji Tsering for an interview i was again amased by his modesty and simpleness. And i remember how supportive he was during the games to his fellow athletes. And i remember Dhartso Kyi, the day she won the long distance run. When reporters asked her about it she burst into tears on the situation in her country...
